Irish potato processing factory planned for Kabale, Bahati tells Kitumba congregation

Kabale is being lined up for an Irish potato processing factory, Trade Minister David Bahati told worshippers at Kakomo Church of Uganda in Kitumba on 14 June 2026. Bahati’s argument was simple: Kigezi already grows the crop, so the peeling, drying and packaging should not all happen after the lorries have left for Kampala. Farmers in Kitumba and neighbouring sub-counties have asked for a plant for years, especially in gluts when sack prices collapse. A factory on paper is not yet a factory on the ground. The newsroom will treat this as a promise to watch — land, power, water and a buyer for the processed product will decide whether it is real. _Based on the Kitumba public address, 14 June 2026._
