Fifty illegal Mabira freehold titles being cancelled, lands minister says

Government is cancelling 50 illegal freehold titles in Mabira Forest, Lands Minister Judith Nabakooba said this week. The 50 are part of 294 titles the ministry has flagged on eight central forest reserves in Mukono. Mabira is the forest most Ugandans know from the Kampala–Jinja highway. Titles inside a reserve are not a paperwork curiosity. They are how wetlands and forests get chopped into plots that then look, on a search, like private land. Nabakooba’s cancellation drive will be tested in court. Joy FM will watch whether the same energy reaches smaller reserves in the south-west, where local titles in swamps are the everyday version of the Mabira story. _Based on the lands ministry briefing, 13 August 2026._
