Uganda Medical Association gives government 14 days over unpaid intern allowances
UMA’s Dr Frank Asiimwe said more than 300 of 2,417 interns have not been paid since July 2025. Emergency care is supposed to continue.

The Uganda Medical Association has given government 14 days to settle unpaid intern allowances, raising the prospect of industrial action if the money does not move. UMA president Dr Frank Asiimwe said the country has 2,417 medical interns on the books, and that more than 300 have not been paid since July 2025. The association says emergency care should continue even if other services slow down. For Kabale Regional Referral Hospital, already dealing with a down X-ray and oxygen plant, a national intern dispute would land on a facility that is short of both machines and morale. Patients in Kigezi do not have a second referral hospital down the road. _Based on UMA’s 13 August briefing, reported nationally._
